Volunteer as an individual

Becoming a Ronald McDonald House volunteer is a special and rewarding experience. You must be 18 years and over to sign up as a regular volunteer.

As a Housekeeping Support Hero your role is to assist housekeeping to maintain the high levels of cleanliness that are set at the house. In addition to the tangible effect of a clean and hygienic environment, there is also the intangible effect of helping to create and maintain the safe and homely environment for families. This is a very important role!

Your tasks could include:

  • Helping collect towels and linen and swap for clean ones
  • Helping with washing and drying laundry
  • Stripping linen in rooms between family stays
  • General kitchen tidy

As a Maintenance Support Hero you play a vital role in ensuring the Houses are safe and operational. This role is hands-on and includes tasks such as making sure our playground is safe, the BBQ is clean and safe, and more skilled jobs if your experience allows.

The Auckland Domain House can quickly become a hive of activity, so it is important to always have a team member at reception to welcome families and visitors. This is a varied role which involves answering the phones, collecting and distributing mail, booking couriers and taxis, and miscellaneous administrative tasks.

A Reception Support Hero is needed at the Auckland Domain House every day. There are two shifts available:

  • Morning reception shift from 9.30am – 1pm
  • Evening reception shift from 5pm – 8pm

When families have a long day up in the wards, coming back to a homemade meal can ease some stress and pressure. As a Dinner Night Host, you will support our chef in managing volunteer groups who participate in our Dinner Nights programme. Your role is to ensure a delicious and nutritious meal is served to our families and ensure that the facilities are left clean and tidy and ready for the next users.

If you have a passion for cooking, people, and hosting, this role is for you.

Throughout the year there are many family and fundraising events where the support of amazing volunteers is needed. There are events for families to celebrate special days like Matariki and Christmas. There are also events to help fundraise and raise awareness for Ronald McDonald House.

You will have the chance to let us know your preferences and interests in your application, however please note, all roles are subject to availability.

The Ronald McDonald House Whānau Room is located inside Christchurch Hospital and provides short-stay bedrooms for caregivers of critically ill children. The Whānau Room is also a space of respite for families who are staying with their child on the ward. It is a quiet day lounge to relax and unwind in a calm and friendly space.

In this role you will cover the lunch shift and greet our families when they come in for lunch, ensuring that they sign in and out and showing them what is available to them whilst there.

As a gardener volunteer you play a vital role in keeping the outside of the house tidy and safe for the families. This role is hands on and includes leaf blowing, water blasting, weeding, watering gardens, cleaning the Gazebo and whatever may be needed outside to keep to area tidy and clean.
